2011 National Corvette Homecoming,
Bowling Green, KY
July 15-16, 2011
Just like you would expect when you visit Bowling Green, KY, southern hospitality is paramount for show owner Joe Pruitt. Here are a few pictures I took, there was lots more stuff going on.
Right off the
bat I ran into my buddy Tom Cobb from Alabama. His '04 was selected for
the Iconic 30, which was a collection of every Corvette from 1981, which was
when the National Corvette Homecoming Show began.
I spotted
this duck-tail in the merchandise area.
This lime
green '62, owned by David Becker made me want to go back and visit Key West
again.
Not exactly bone stock, but it was a winner in the modified category.
A
tremendous amount of work went into this
car as you can see.
This is (L to R)
Vera Pruitt and Jan Cobb. They are
manning the entrance to the Sloan Center from the
University Holiday Inn.
The pictures get
smaller and smaller, sorry 'bout that.
This is a '61 from Kentucky, in the background is the
Sloan Convention Center, HQ for the show.
And this was a
good way of doing it. It's drive-up service.
No, not to get a milk shake, it is drive-up judging.
This red '54
belongs to Dale and Karen Johnson, it
has lots of pedigrees.
Lance Miller was
at the show, and he brought the #3
Le Mans car.
Sheila Self
brought her '54 for show and judging. It won
Sapphire Sans Pareil last year. This is a stunning car. It
was repainted with lacquer by Billy Smith. She drives it.
It wasn't all
turn signals and transmissions. This is a
seminar on grilling. It was over my head, but the audience was
totally into it.
On display were
the last Corvette made in St. Louis (1981 on the right),
and the first Corvette made in Bowling Green (1981on the left).
Hadn't seen these cars before. Maybe I have had a sheltered life.
This blue '54
belongs to Gary Self, from Alabama. The odometer
shows 3 miles, it has gone 3 miles from the just finished restoration.
This car was also a show winner.
This blue '61 is
owned by Jack and Marcie Mitchell from TN.
As you can see, it would be hard to judge these cars, they are super
nice all around.
This nice red '62
was at the show courtesy of William Lowry from TN.
This is an all
original example. The owner was killed in Vietnam
on 9/6/69, instructed that the car be given to his friend.
The show is in
Bowling Green, Kentucky, and it is in Central Great Rivers
Chapter territory. Here you see George Williams, CGRC member, with
his 1988 Anniversary Special. The car was built on 8-8-88. It was
also in the Iconic 30. George is
the 2nd owner, it is Bloomington Gold, Benchmark, and Survivor. It sports
the original tires. No, he didn't drive 100 mph on the Natcher Parkway in
it.
Wait, maybe I am
wrong! Maybe he did! Here you see him getting a ticket from the
Warren County, KY Chief Deputy.
Actually, the Chief Deputy was a celebrity judge, and George was
selected
a winner. Congrats, George!
Once again, sorry about these
small pictures. This is the awards
being given out. Lots of trophies on those tables.
Kinda hard to
see, but it was party time that evening. This is the
Blue Light Special Band, (all law enforcement guys at their day job).
They did lots of rockin' tunes, even got them off their lawn chairs to
do the twist.
So if you made it to the show you had a good time, if you missed it, there's always next year. Now I sound like a Cubs fan. Sorry about that comment, Cubs fans. As Joe Pruitt stated at the conclusion of the show, there were more vendors than ever before, I got some stuff, too. So put the National Corvette Homecoming show on your calendar for next year.
