Red River Chapter Tech Session, "Remove That Windshield"!
January 26, 2020, Wylie, Texas
The Red
River Chapter of the Solid Axle Corvette Club held a tech seminar
on how to remove a C-1 windshield correctly.
It was a nice winter day in the Dallas area, and a good group of
members and guests
learned how to avoid pitfalls when it unfortunately comes time to replace the
windshield on a C-1.
As chapter president Bill Preston and tech advisor John Spencer
noted, "This is a tedious job
that is not for amateurs.
At 10AM the chapter convened on John Spencer's garage for a most informative tech session.
As you can see, there were some very nice cars parking there.
Here's the car
that is being used as an example. It is John Spencer's charcoal 1958, and
it is
a sweet car.
John had already unbolted all the tedious bolts, so the
windshield with frame was all
ready to be lifted.
This is session was about how to correctly remove the windshield and then the bezel should it need to be replaced.
The windshield on the '58 was removed and taken to this table.
For orientation, the frame is actually upside-down, showing the 12-24 bolts that hold the frame onto the car.
(L to R) Bill Preston, John Spencer, Tom Jackson.
Now you see the windshield laying on it's back, so to speak.
Removing the windshield from the car is not easy at all. And removing
the bezel parts is tricky also. Actually very tricky.
Here's the bottom line: If you C-1 windshield needs to be
replaced, do not take it to an ordinary
auto glass place. They will not know how to replace it with out doing
damage.
As chapter president Bill Preston (second from the right) noted,
"whoever invented the Rubic's cube is probably a
descendant of the one who invented the C-1 windshield/frame".
